Today's Run - 2006-06-26

Excellent running on a sultry morning. I did my 3 x (1600, 1200, 800) routine at the Brunswick track.

It was tough, but I managed to be consistent. Did have to stop between sets though. Good to have this one in.

The times: 6:17, 4:44, 2:56, 6:18, 4:42, 2:57, 6:15, 4:40, 2:56.
Altogether 12 in 89 minutes.

Today's Run - 2006-06-25

Ran over to the non-existent Brunswick 5K (evidently it was cancelled), and wound up just running around, including some on Brunswick(!) Track. 8 in 63. I'll do speedwork tomorrow since there was no race.

Recent Running and other stuff

Dan was not accepted at Northwestern and will attend Notre Dame. Valerie will stay in Chicago and keep her job. We've committed to give them the Cavalier to get back and forth. Meanwhile, I think the whale is dying - can't get out of 2nd gear. So we may be down to 1 car. And I can't stand the thought of buying another.

I did the Wadsworth Matchstick Festival 4-mile last night. Debbie came along and we went to the wonderful festival afterwards. I ran better than expected - 24:40, but didn't get an award.

Today I ran about 13 miles in 1:50 with Dave and Amy.

Today's Run - 2006-06-21

Having some time on my hands again, I did the Grand Rounds for the second time this week. Today it was much warmer (low 70s) and much more humid. My goal was to finish stronger and have a slightly faster time than that of Monday.

The humidity hit me right away. Even though my legs were remarkably un-sore and un-tired, by breathing was labored. so the first few miles were slightly slower than Monday's. I was able to pick it up just a bit in the middle section on Minnihaha Parkway, and yes, I finished stronger as well. Not a lot stronger, just a little. But considering the heat, I'll call it a very good run.

I did: first 7.25 or so down to South Beach on Lake Harriet (59). 5.5 or so on Minnehaha Parkway (43). last 7.25 (55.5). Altogether it was 2:38. I decided to add one minute to this time and to Monday's because running from the Courtyard is just slightly shorter than from the Marriott.

Today's Run - 2006-06-20

10 fairly easy miles along the Mississippi today in about 83 minutes. Nothing too strenuous - I may do another long run again tomorrow.

It was a pretty morning with a spectacular sunrise. Yes, Rain's coming.

To try something new, I also went east on Franklin for about 2 miles into St. Paul. Thinking just a bit about the Twin Cities Marathon in October, which runs along most of my usual lakes and river Grand Rounds routes, but also finishes by going up Franklin. That part isn't as nice as the rest.

Got blisters on the backs of my ankles from my new dress shoes that I have to walk a couple miles a day in. Shoring things up with band-aids.

Today's Run - 2006-06-19

One of the better times for the Grand Rounds 20-mile course (2:38:30). I just made it an official route. I used to call it 21, but now it seems short for even 20. Good start and middle, slower finish on tired legs.

This was from the Courtyard, not the Marriott, but the distance should be about the same. - first 7.25 or so down to South Beach on Lake Harriet (58). 5.5 or so on Minnehaha Parkway (44). last 7.25 (58.5).

Today's Track Workout and other stuff

Went to Sans Souchi last night for our anniversary. The night before Debbie made me chicken paprikas for Fathers Day. TOO MUCH Good food! Today we do to Mario's Baptism. More food. Then I take off for Minneapolis. More food.

Today's run was a real tough one. I wanted to improve on last week's 10k workout, but wasn't even close. It was soooo hot and humid - in the mid 70s - probably 25F more than last week.

I almost quit at half-way, but somehow I struggled though it.

And I'm glad I did. Even though it almost killed me. A minute+ slower than last time, but I'm happy just to have finished in that heat.

87(37),87(36),86(43),85(44),87(44),86(38),88(43),86(51),86(46),88(36),89(45),90(46),89(48),89(39),89(43),90(54),90(44),90(38),89(43),86(22)
overall 43:39. splits: 21.5, 22

Today's Run - 2006-06-17

A very nice 15 miles today in 2:12.

It was on the towpath and up the Old Carriage Trail with Dave and brother Don. The trail running was fairly slow, but the rest was decent, as we got faster towards the end.

Today's Long Run - 2006-06-15

I didn't plan to do 24 on the Lester Rail Trail. That is, until I awoke at 2:30 and got out of bed at 3:15. THEN I decided to do 24 on the trail.

And it was a great run! By far my fastest on that course. And the last 4 were (barely) at marathon pace. Couldn't have been much better. Beautiful morning too.

6-mi splits: 49:18, 47:48, 46:17, 43:14

3:09:39!

Today's Running - 2006-06-13

3 on the mill and then 10 with Dave on the usual loop. Old tired legs could only do 83 minutes for that one. But that's ok - yesterday was great.

Today's Run - 2006-06-12

86(41,88(37),86(40),85(41),89(45),87(37),88(41),86(46),88(46),87(35),87(43),87(38),88(44),88(34),87(36),87(47),87(40),86(35)87(41),85(22)

These were my 400 meter times for a run that I had approached with as much trepidation as any. It was probably a combination of the tummy problems (tons of Thai last night) and fear that I hadn't done this workout in a long long time. But I didn't think it would go well. I figured about 94 or so for each 400 and about 45 minutes overall. Here all were under 90 and my overall time was 42:30 - one of my best for this workout.

Now if I can only lose that weight back.

Today's Run and Walk - 2006-06-11

I did my 11-mile Substation loop again today. I started decently, but the middle was very slow. The last 4 were decent again. Overall, just a so-so run - 93 minutes. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

Nice walk with Debbie on the Old Carriage Trail. It's a tough 5.5 mile hike, but we managed just fine. That is such a beautiful trail.

Saw 3 snakes - 2 of them good-sized garters, and one a very large black snake. That's the biggest snake I've seen in NE Ohio. Debbie was afraid to cross it's path, but it eventually crossed over and moved on - it had it's own snake business to attend to.

Also saw a baltimore oriole.

Today's Run and Graduation Party

Ran on the towpath and various wooded trails with Dave, Amy and Brian for 2:20 or so. Very nice trail running. When we got back on the towpath, Dave wanted to pick it up for the last mile - to a 6:00 pace. I answered that I had never ever run a 6 minute mile on the towpath, but that I'd try to pick it up anyway. The other two started fast, but I finished fast, passing them in the last quarter or so. My time? 5:53! Dave and Brian did 6 minutes flat. I'll call it 17 today - most was pretty slow, but we did gradually pick it up. Fun going.

Nice talking with Dave, Brett and Amy at Bruggers afterwards.

Then it was on to Tom and Debbie's son Andrew's Graduation party. It was really great to see all my cousins again. And we're all excited to be seeing each other again in 3 more weeks.

More on Travel and Running Yesterday and Today

Looks like Debbie can go to Prague and Budapest with me! We did it with FF miles. This is exciting.

Yesterday I got to the track and did well. No more soreness. Very steady running of the old 3 x (1600, 1200, 800) routine. Averaged 6:28, 4:46, 2:59. Just what I wanted to do.

Today I just did two on the mill but I managed to get my weight back down by another pound - to 155. Sure is going down slower this time. More news - I'm not so tired and sore anymore.

Today's Run 2006-06-06

6-6-06 - scary.

I did 3 on the mill in just 22 minutes and then headed over to Broadview Heights. There I ran a few with Dave, including Boston Hill, and then we picked up Debbie and Amy. After we dropped Dave off I ran Amy and Debbie back and did some more extra - including by the old house - to wind up with 2:16. I'll call it 16 miles.

Still tired and slow...

Travel! and Today's Run - 2006-06-05

We're in the process of booking our trip to Greece. Took Debbie all day, but it looks like we'll be doing the Cosmos land and cruise 2-week tour. Complicated situation trying to use FF miles and also save on the tour, but it looks like it's gonna happen.

Now for the running news: why o why am I so sore all the time? Is it the recent racing? The extra weight? (back down to 156, but still a ways to go) The weight lifting? (not doing all that much). I just don't understand it.

Today's run was ok - the 11-mile route through the new subs in 91 minutes. I didn't expect great things due to the soreness - only wanted a steady pace and I got that. Just woulda liked it to be slightly faster.

Today's Running - 2006-06-04

Slow going today. Really slow.

I did 2 on the mill before heading over to Rocky River Park to run with George, Bob and Laura. Did about 8 more there in 76 minutes. Legs very tired.

Orrville YMCA 10K

A sub-40 minute 10k isn't as good as a sub-3 hour marathon, but it's still quite an achievement, and it's always a goal for any 10k I consider. I'm not always able to do it, even when I'm in good shape. I think I managed my last one about 2 years ago. I wanted to do it in Cleveland a few weeks ago, but the course snafu put the cabash on that idea. That was too bad, because based on my split times, I think my 10k time would have been very good indeed. For those keeping score, 40 minutes over 6.2 miles equates to about a 6:26 pace.

Today's weather wasn't too bad: it was probably in the upper 60s, with a lot of humidity. Luckily the sun wasn't out to bake us too much. And there were some hills, especially in the first half. Nothing unmanageable, but enough to make the course challenging.

Today's mile splits: 6:23, 6:31, 6:25 (half-way in something like 19:50 to 19:55), 6:22, 6:21, and 7:54 for the last 1.2. I finished in 39:57!!! 1st in my AG too. Still got some mojo left, but it may be going fast.

More On Travel (or is it Moron Travel)

It still looks like I'm going to Romania, Czeck Republic and Hungary in July, but it's still not 100% confirmed. We've pretty much decided that Debbie shouldn't go along. She doesn't want to just sit in hotel rooms the whole time, considering the cost. I'll sure miss her - especially when going to these neat places.

Instead, we're looking into going to Greece for a tour and/or a cruise. They're expensive, so we're trying to weigh all the options.

Today's Run - 2006-06-02

I was about as tired as I thought I'd be, so this wasn't a great day for running. I did 2 on the mill and then 3 outside at 9 minute pace. Weighed in for the first time since the trip: 157. Exactly what I thought. I probably put on 10 lbs during the trip and am now down to 5. These will be tougher though.

Today's Run - 2006-06-01

O what a difference a day off makes. It was warm again (70) and very humid, but something got into me and I managed a PR for the Substation 11 course: 83 minutes.

I started fast with miles 2-4 in a blazing 19:03 - my fastest tempo run in quite a while. After another good mile, I slowed down substantially during those middle miles. My still sore legs and the humidity were taking their toll. I was barely hanging on with 8-9 minute miles. Then I somehow managed to pick it up again for the last two at about 7 minute pace.

Had a cold bath to help my weary legs recover afterwards.

Today's Run - 2006-05-30

Dave and I were both extremely tired and sore, but we made it through the old 10-mile loop in decent shape. 81 and a half minutes. Not bad at all.

Today's Run - 2006-05-29

A really decent Memorial Day run today. It was very warm (mid-upper 70s), sunny and humid, but I was steady the whole way.

Started with 4 in the Presidential streets in 30 and a half minutes, then Dave came and we did a long 15 (the usual 16 mile course cut slightly short) in 2:01 and a half. I'm still sore these days, and my tummy's big from all the food from the trip and from Kathy and Mike's yesterday, but all in all it was a very good run.

May 28 Run and Kids Visit

We didn't do a whole lot over the weekend, but it sure was nice to have the kids visit. We did head to Rocky River Reservation for a short walk on Sunday, visit Mom on Friday, and shop on Saturday, but otherwise we just hung out. They liked the movie theater - we watched a couple flicks. After everyone left yesterday we went to Kathy and Mike's for ribs. Good food, but as usual I ate too much.

Yesterday I did 13 on a warm sunny morning. Something I'm not really used to. My ole legs were tired from the race and lack of sleep, but I managed to keep an 8:30 or so pace going. I did the usual 11 mile Substation Loop with and extra 2 on Sleepy Hollow to get the hills in. Altogether I did it in 1:50. Now I'm about to head out for a longer run with Dave.

Medina Heros 4 Mile

I needed a reality check and I got one. This was in the series and it was close (Medina Career Center), so I had to do it even with the kids being in. It was nice to run on the rail trail that I'm used to. The humidity actually made it tough. Anyway it was a real slow one for me. Here are the splits:
6:15, 6:25, 6:41, 6:41 for a 26:04. Don't know how well I placed, but there were some geezers ahead of me. Nowhere to go but up from here.

Germany

Out of all the places for phase 1 of this client project, Germany wouldn't have been my top choice. Spain or Italy sound much nicer. Not so sure about the UK. But Germany it is, and here I am. The other problem was missing the Cleveland Marathon this weekend. Nothing I could do about that either.

Getting here was somewhat uncomfortable, as most long flights are. I did manage some sleep on the way from JFK to Amsterdam. The flight from Amsterdam to Dusseldorf was only about 40 minutes in a puddle jumper.

Upon arriving at the hotel at about 2pm, I tried to call home, since I had figured it to be 8pm there. When Debbie didn't answer after repeated tries I started to panic - she had driven home from Connecticut, and should have arrived hours earlier. The panic was worse because I couldn't call anyone else - all my numbers are in my cell phone which was at home since it wouldn't work here. Of course I finally found out that Cleveland is 6 hours BEHIND Dusseldorf, not ahead of it. So it was still morning there, and Debbie wouldn't be home for hours.

Early on, I had only eaten at the hotel and at the client cafeteria. Nothing really great to speak of, but lots and lots of volume. Breakfast (and today, lunch) buffets sure don't help when it comes to controlling intake. Some of the food is quite interesting - the white asparagus as a main course is very good. The waitresses will tell you to eat it because it's good for you. Yeah, but not the gallon of hollandaise you smother it in. You can still order meat or fish as a side dish. Other German favorites abound as well. I feel like I'll weigh a ton when I get back.

Without a car, and a couple miles away from the city center, there's not much to do (except work) and I'm not getting out much. I run in the morning, and walk in the evening, mostly along the Rhine River. It's wonderfully serene, with very wide park-like areas on both banks. And there are walk, bike and run paths galore all over the city, with several stretching for miles and miles along the river.

Work is ok. The client contacts all speak English, but some are hard to understand. The counts can be intense because of the language and because some are tightly scheduled. The good news is that there isn't an over-abundance of follow-on work. So I do have some time to myself in the evenings.

After a few days of hotel food, I finally did venture out some. Yesterday Pam and I walked along the Rhine to a restaurant that I had discovered right along the river. It was nice eating out on the back deck overlooking some yachts. The folks didn't speak much English, but we managed - I wound up with a ball-o-burger meat with fried eggs on top for 7 euros. Pam got filet mignon for 8 euros. Then today we figured out the subway/train situation enough to ride it to downtown and old town Dusseldorf. Being a stranger in a strange land, especially when you don't speak the language means that you spend an awful lot of time being lost, dazed and confused.

Old town is like a typical European town with cobblestone streets, shopping, and several nice restaurants and bars. We ate at a German place where I sampled 4 types of sausage with kraut and fries. This on top of the appetizer of tons of cheese with bread. This is fat/cholesterol heaven.

Speaking of lost and confused, we somehow found our way over to Cologne (via a train from the main station) the next day. More cobblestone streets, bars, restaurants and shopping. But there were two differences: this is the actual home of the original cologne, and there's one mother of a cathedrals here. It seemed to me that it put Notre Dame to shame. We took a $4 english tour and learned about the history of the place. Turns out the the Magi (yes, the original three wise guys) are supposedly buried there by the altar. How's that for history? Then we climbed something on the order of 350-400 feet to the top of the tower. As Lori had said, you must have bats in your belfry to do something like that. Quite a view from up there though.

Every morning I make the usual choices about how long, far, fast to run, etc., but also one of four more choices: east or west bank of the Rhine, and north or south. Today it was south on the east bank, and it wasn't the greatest, even though the footing was good - too much industry there. I've got it figured out now: for longer runs, north along east bank is best, and for shorter runs, south on the west bank rules.

There were two choices Pam and I could think of to see more of the best of Dusseldorf: take the train to a palace built in the 1800s (supposedly rivaling Versailles) and take a city tour. In order to get a more thorough and varied outlook, we went for the city tour. After walking around old town and exploring some more very old churches, we got on the bus. The speaker spoke German first and then English, and it was a bit distracting. After riding around town for a while we got on a boat for a river tour. That was pretty neat. Then the tour wound up going up to the Rhine tower which is 168 meters high - way above the surrounding buildings. But only a little higher than we climbed yesterday. We could see Cologne, our hotel, way up and down the river, etc. Pretty neat too.

So the tour was decent. We were lucky with the weather - it was cloudy, but at least there was no rain like we had yesterday. As a result, I left my umbrella at a restaurant. I think I'd still like to see the palace though.

No discussion of experiences in a foreign land would be complete without a note about bathrooms. Pam and I tried everything we could think of when asking if there was one in the Dusseldorf main train station: men/ladies/women's room, toilets, rest rooms, potties, you name it. We got the same answer from two different information persons: There aren't any of those in Dusseldorf. A bit later on while we were still wandering in the station, Pam asked what "WC" means. That's when it dawned on me: having been to Europe before, I should have known what to ask for. One other thing: there are public walk-in urinals all over town. They have a little boy peeing logo on them. Very handy if you're of a gender who is able to stand during the act. No help for sitting type genders.

For the second to the last evening, Pam and I went back to old town to shop for a few last-minute souvineers and to eat dinner. Picked up a couple things, and the Agentine/Spanish steak place was really good. Then it was time to take the subway back. We thought we had these things figured out really well. The U77 comes closest to the hotel, but it stops running at 7:30pm and also doesn't go on weekends. That's ok, because we can also take the U70, U74 or U76, which are only a little farther away. It was 7:50 and we were waiting for a U74 or U76 when we saw a U77 come by on a different than usual track. Pam said, "Let's catch that one", but as we were getting on, I had a few reservations: 1) it was on the wrong track, 2) it was after hours, 3) based on 1 and 2, it may have possibly been going the wrong way. I mentioned being dubious, but continued to get on anyway. As the doors closed there came two more resevations: 4) we were the only people on the train and 5) one guy outside was wagging his finger at us in a strange manner.

The train left and after a few minutes pulled up to stop at a subway-train graveyard. There didn't appear to be any way to get out without walking on the tracks, although this turned out to be not completely the case. As the lights began to go out in the train, I said something on the order of, "we're in deep s__t!". We ran up to discuss the situation with the driver, who smiled but didn't speak English at all, except to say, "10 minutes, one stop". After moving over to a different train, he got us going back to the station again after the mandatory stupid-American 10-minute penalty waiting period. There we were able to finally get off and then onto the U74 for the ride home.

Running in Germany

5/16/06 and earlier
Been a long time since I've had time to write. Here I am in Dusseldorf and running is pretty good here. Monday I did about 8 miles going north along the Rhine. Very nice run/walk and bike paths all over, especially along the river. There are several there. Yesterday I overslept, and today I ran for 2 hours along the river, mostly south. I'll call it 15 miles. After getting to the end of the path, I turned back and then crossed the bridge and ran on that side including some exploration around old town. Came back across the closest of the three bridges. I almost didn't make it out because of the cool rain. That rain subsided after about an hour.

I also ran about 16 on Saturday in Norwalk. 6 were on the mill in about 42.5 minutes, and the last 10 were on the roads, some familiar, in about 82 minutes.

5/18/06
I was very tired but I had time in the morning, so I set out to do 20. My legs wouldn't have it though. I only did about 10 along the river. I went north again and this time made it as far as the northern bridge. It got rural quickly, but still nice paths to run on.

After a breakfast AND a lunch buffet, I headed out for another late afternoon run. I mostly wanted to check out the restaurants that are along the river so we can walk to them tonight. They're there all right - about a mile and a half away. I did about 4 altogether - still slow and tired.

Don't know why these ole legs would be tired. I really haven't been running much. And now I'm *starting* to get the right amount of sleep.

5/19/06
14 along the river - this time I crossed the bridge and went north on the eastern side. This was the best running yet - nice path and scenery the whole way. Good steady pace today - maybe a bit better than 8 mpm. Nice clear, cool (about 50-55) morning.

5/20/06
Just a couple around the neighborhood near the hotel.

5/21/06
Marathon day, and I'm missing it. Had planned on a long one, but didn't get quite as many in as I thought I might. Simply ran out of time. Twas a nice day for running along the Rhine. Besides the usual morning questions of how far/fast, I have to decided north or south on the Rhine, as well as east or west bank.

Today I went south on the west bank to the 3rd bridge, crossed over into town, and then continued south on the east bank. Although the path kept going a long way, the scenery wasn't always so great - there were junk yards, rail junctions, and other industry. I finally got to some nicer parts, but then the path ended. After heading back and across the first bridge, I went south again to get about 4-5 more in.

Altogether 21 in 2:50. Not bad - steady the whole way.

I now know that north on the east bank seems to be best for long runs, and south on the west bank is best for shorter ones.

5/22/06
I believe it's been raining every day at least some point during my run. Today it started off bright and sunny as I headed north on the path along the road (parallel with, but slightly away from the river). As I got to Meerbrush, I spotted a storm with rain and lightning to the north and west, and it appeared to be headed my way. I turned and headed over to the river and went back the usual way, picking up the pace. It rained on me for the last mile and a half. Altogether I'll call it 6 in 46.5 minutes.

5/23/06
Another 14 along the Rhine just like the other day - all to the north on the east bank. And very nice again too. Only problem was the wind - it was ferocious, especially on the return. And at 50F, it really felt cold. Still managed negative splits and did it in 1:50.

Late in the afternoon I went out again. Tried to avoid the rain as it was sunny for a minute when I was starting out. The clouds moved in quickly as I turned around as planned at 16 minutes (at the 2nd bridge). With big dark clouds coming fast I hit the overdrive button and made it back in 13 minutes. I think the distance was legit because I checked the pace against one set of kilometer markings.

5/25/06
My last run for this trip was a long and wet one along the Rhine as always. This time I went south on both banks. Also ran around downtown and harbor area a bit. It was cold (50 or so), windy and wet (constant rain). But I did about 21 at a fairly steady pace, and don't feel too bad now that I'm done. 2 hours 53 minutes.

Now I can go home.

Got Home Early and Today's Run

Thank goodness I could come home a day early. Had to buy a one-way ticket to do so, so don't know how that'll go over. But I really really needed to get home. Spending today trying to get caught up with all my work before heading off to Connecticut and then Germany.

I don't usually run well, or even at all after travelling the night before. But I needed something of substance today. Didn't expect great things, just something semi-fast, and consistent.

It was a blustery morning. I got what I wanted - 6 x 1600 in an average of 6:31. Not real speedy, but I'll take it. Now I'm tuckered out.

Today's Run - 2006-05-09

Woke up way early so I decided to make it a long run day. Only there was a chance of rain, so I did it on the hotel dreadmill. It was mostly ok - after 15 miles at a decent pace, with even a couple of the miles at sub-7 pace, I did the next 5 at sub-7 pace. After 20.5, the machine shut itself down so I moved onto an eliptical trainer for another 1.5. So altogether 22 in 2:40.

Today's Run and other stuff - 2006-05-08

10 along the Mississippi. Easy does it.

Looks like I can go home Wednesday instead of Thursday. This is wonderful - I really need that day at home. The only problem is that I can't change my flights. Had to buy new ones after goin' nuts trying different things. Don't know if they'll like that at Target.

Revol Race for Kids

I really wanted to post a good fast 10K today. It didn't happen because of a course screw-up. At least 6-8 of us went off course and cut it short by perhaps .3 of a mile. Some course marshall was sleeping on the job. Drat. I did run well though: the 1st 1.2 was 7:46, the next 1 was 6:00, the next whatever, including the off-course part was 16:34, so I hit "5.2" in 30:20. (In my dreams). Anyway, the last mile was in 6:12.

I finished in 36:32, a PR by a minute plus (In my dreams)... Still it was a good run. I was probably in the top 10, even considering that some went off-course and some didn't. I wasn't 1st in my AG though - another fast geezer showed up.

Got to run around Jacobs field as a cool down.

Yesterday's Run

11 on the towpath with Dave and Amy. Nice and easy since I'm doing the 10k today.

Today's Running - 2006-05-04

A solid 21 today - 4 on the mill in 31 and then 17 on the roads in 2:21. The outside stuff was nice - it was another very nice morning.

Today's Running - 2006-05-02

I did one on the mill before heading to BVH to run with Amy and Dave. For some reason, Dave wanted to quit earlier than normal, and Amy wanted to run more than normal, so I would up with about 14.

Working on this Germany trip, along with all the other travel plans.

Recent Running

Yesterday I did the 11-mile Substation loop in 90 minutes. The ole legs were pretty tired.

Today I weighed in at 152 - pretty good. Then I did speedwork: 3 x (1600, 1200, 800) averaging 6:20, 4:40 and 3:02. Excellent!

In the afternoon I did a not-so-excellent-but-still-ok 2 on the mill in 15 minutes.

Today's Run - 2006-04-29

Pretty decent 19 miles on the towpath today with Amy, Dave, Brian. We started slow, but the last 6+ were at about 7:30 pace. I was fairly tired by the end.

Dave Jill and Mario stopped over in the afternoon. We ate too much - and I was doing so well...

work and today's run

So busy with work that I don't have a spare minute. 15 hours yesterday, 10 the day before.

I do have time to run though. 15 along the river today in 1:51 - pretty durn good with a strong 2nd half.

Today's Run - 2005-04-25

Really good treadmill run today. It was cold (30s) outside, so I stuck to the hotel mill. Pretty good going - 12 in 81 minutes with 8 x 1600 averaging 6:20.

Today's Run - 2006-04-24

I'm in a different hotel (Courtyard at the Depot) so I went exploring today. Then I wound up at the U of Minn. track. I'm about a mile closer than I was from the City Center Marriott. Of course this means that it's a mile or a bit less to walk to work every day. Oh well.

I hadn't expected to do any speedwork, but once on the track, I decided, what the heck? So I did some 200's. Wound up with 8, averaging a pretty-durn-fast 36 seconds. Altogether I did 10 in about 83 minutes.

Since I need some longer speedwork, I'll probably head to the track either tomorrow or Wednesday. Problem is, it'll be colder - today was nice: about 50.

Today's Run - 2006-04-23

Great long run today with the Vertical Runner group. 20+ miles in 2:37 or so. Felt good and strong the whole way. Ran with Eileen Meisler, some other familiar, and some new folks. We did the towpath, bike and hike, and old carriage trails. Best I've felt since Boston.

Today's Running and Some Other Stuff

Other stuff first:

Kathy and Mike came over for pizza yesterday. Debbie is done with their tiller, but they'll take it back another time. Debbie's been working hard to prepare that garden. I've been busy with work even though many of the hours aren't billable. Last minute trip arrangements took up a good deal of Friday's time.

I ran 3 on the mill and then did 11 with Dave and Amy on the towpath. Sure was nice to run on that towpath again. Nice spring morning. I'm starting to almost feel human again, but still sore, tired and slow.

Today's Run - 2006-04-21 - and other stuff

On the Lester Rail Trail for the first time in 5-6 months. Very nice. And I got under 9 mpm! Wow.

Went to see Mom the other day. She sure liked the spring blossoms.

I'm re-directed to go to Target next week vs Bellsouth. Causing a lot of work to line it up.

Barry got into Columbia for a master's program. Good news.

Today's Running - 2006-04-20

Very slow going this morning. I did the same 11-mile route as a week ago, but MUCH slower. Doesn't bother me too much, but I do need to begin to get into shape for Cleveland, and this is the time I need to do it.

I went out again in the late afternoon. That one was REALLY bad - 2 miles was all I could do. I had planned to get some warm (70s) weather running in. Bleh.

Dan Horvath's Adventures in Beantown: The 2006 Boston Marathon

There were only a couple of random reasons for making the pilgrimage this year. Friends Brian and Eileen Peacock invited me, I had a free airline ticket that needed to be burned soon, and I had written in Marathon and Beyond about this being the 10th anniversary of the 100th anniversary running of the Boston marathon, and thus felt somewhat obliged to make an appearance.

Still having it bounce around in my head that I absolutely cannot run my fastest in Boston, I wasn't going to go all out. I was going to use this as a stepping stone to Cleveland, where I was going to really rock and roll. Yes, Boston was going to be a "training run". With this in mind, I ran hard at a half marathon the previous weekend, and planned to just take it easy and go with the flow for Boston Weekend.

And for the most part, go with the flow I did. Saturday the Peacocks had a small gathering at their place that included neighbors, some local runners and my daughter Veronica and son-in-law Barry, who drove over from Connecticut. Easter Sunday we hit the expo for a short time - it was nice to be there before the crowds. Then we went to dinner at their friends' place. Lots of good food and conversation.

On race day Monday, Brian and I got on the New Bedford running club's chartered bus to Hopkinton. For $15 each, the bus dropped us at the start and picked us up at the finish to bring us back. This was as low-hassle a deal as can be had at Boston.

The temperatures were in the low to mid 50s all day, and it was mostly cloudy and somewhat breezy. Darn! This meant I'd have to run fast... or die tryin'. It was not going to be a training run.

So here was yet another contrast to last year - besides the low-hassle vs high-hassle logistics, this time I just couldn't get warm while waiting around the athletes village whereas last year I was soaking up that hot sun. This year I went into the school to get a pre-race massage. Not because I thought I needed one (never tried one before a thon before), but just to get out of the cold for a while. This year there was a 2-wave start, and the athletes village was split into two parts. I learned that whereas the 12-noon start area had very long porta-john lines, the 12:30 start area had no lines at all. Gotta remember this if I ever return for my 10th Boston in 2021 or so. I mention 2021 because that will be the 125th running, and I'm sure I won't be able to resist the hoopla and perhaps even write about that great 110th running. I also bumped into training partners Dave Gajewski and Brian Gittinger in the village. We tramped down to the start together, but were all in different corrals.

My number this year was 5448, my highest ever. The 5000 corral didn't get to the starting line until 2:40 or so after the gun went off. The first mile was slow just because it was still so crowded. But the weather was holding - it still felt cool and breezy, with almost no direct sunlight. I felt great. The next several miles went by very easily as I kept the pace between 7 minutes and about 7:10.

Obligitory Wellesley Report: Wildly enthusiastic gals as usual, but I don't think there were as many as other years. My theory is that since this was Easter weekend, a lot of them were at home for a visit. Best sign: "Flash Us", then in smaller letters: "(Men only, please)". I kept my shorts on, but I felt like I was now running faster again.

Only I wasn't. Here are the mile splits for the 1st half:
1) 7:22
2) 7:06
3) 7:05
4) 7:00
5) 7:09
6) 7:07
7) 7:09
8) 7:12
9) 7:05
10) 7:16
11) 7:15
12) 7:16
13) 7:21

I think my half-way split was something like 1:34 and change. If I could run even splits, I'd have a great day, but I didn't like the trend of those mile splits. My effort level seemed to be constant, but the times were steadily slowing. I've been here before. Many times.

I did still feel pretty good though. Last year, everything hurt for the whole run. This time I was only hurting a bit, and I definitely was not over-heating or dehydrated. I knew there were some more steep downhills coming up, and made up my mind to hit those fast. I also knew that the Newton uphills, including Heartbreak, were looming.

Miles 14-20 were like this:
14) 7:18
15) 7:15
16) 7:00 - big downhill
17) 7:30 - the start of the Newton Hills
18) 7:30
19) 7:06
20) 7:23
21) 7:59 - Heartbreak Hill

I was somehow holding my own through the hills. Of course the uphills were slow, but I wasn't crashing and burning altogether. I still felt like I had something left. I hit the 20-mile mark at about 2:24 and a half. I could still run a decent time if I could only pick the pace back up to the very low 7-minute range until the finish. The only problem was that Heartbreak Hill was next. And yes, it was tough, and my slowest of the bunch.

After the crest of Heartbreak Hill, there are some more steep downhills, and no other major uphills until the finish. So it was hammer time. And somehow, hammer I did:

22) 7:00
23) 7:16
24) 6:49
25) 7:08
26.2) 8:21 for last 1.2 - I think this works out to a 6:57 pace

For those last 5 miles I knew I could finish fast. I didn't think I could - I knew I could! Felt great to be passing so many runners. It was a little tough to get around them at times, but I managed.

I crossed the line in 3:09:14. My best since 2002, and my best Boston since 1997. I'm extremely happy that I was able to finish so strong. That cool weather was *wonderful*. Another factor: I took a Gu at about mile 17, and then others at about miles 20 and 23. This time, they really seemed to help.

After a long wait, I got another massage (an excellent one) afterwards. I then lumbered back to the bus to finally get into some warm clothes.

I placed somewhere in the 2000's. That's understandable at a big race like Boston. But how in the world did 78 50-year-olds beat me?? Oh well, I'll still take it. There are so many races, especially marathons where I fail to meet my own expectations, usually after starting out at a fast pace, that I'd better savor this unusual situation where I actually met my tough standards.

Now that this "training run" is over, I'd better start training for Cleveland. I fear that I may have jeopardized my chances of a sub-3 there by running this one so hard. I may just do my best at Cleveland and really hit one hard in the fall. We'll see.

Today's Running - 2006-04-13

I did the 11-mile course through the new subs once again today. Wanted to do better than Tuesday. I did! Much better. I really shattered the course PR this time. (82.5 minutes vs 84.5 the other day, including my first ever, I think, tempo run on Sleepy Hollow.) Even so, I should still be able to run it faster. But I'll take it for now.

I did another 3 at lunch time. I was real nice - sunny and in the 60s. I did the Presidents run in a near-tempo 21:13.

Recent Running and Other Stuff

I did 3 on the mill and then 10 on the roads on very tired legs on Sunday. Twas my slowest in a while, but I just wanted to get the miles in. These early spring runs have been enjoyable, with the birds singing, the cool crisp air and the early sunrises.

Today I tackled my 11-mile route through the new subs. I did 84.5, which isn't real fast, but it's by far my best on this course. Still couldn't manage to get down to tempo pace even when it felt like I was flying. Towards the end when I was slowing down, it wasn't quite as bad as I thought.

Yesterday I got down to 151! Today I was back to 152, but that ain't bad either.

Been real busy with work - 14 hours yesterday. I'm starting at 7am through Wednesday, so that puts a damper on running.

Debbie went to see newly-returned Mom yesterday, and Carol met them as well.

Today's Race

I always like races that have a lot of words in them. Today's was the Cleveland West Road Runners Club Spring Classic Half-Marathon and Five-K. The plan was to run the first 7 miles easy - maybe about 7 minute pace, and then hammer the last 6.1, bringing the pace down to about 6:30, and completing the whole thing in about 89 minutes.

Didn't happen. I felt like I was running very slowly, but those first couple miles were in the 6:30 to 6:40 range. After about 3 1/2, we turned back into the cold wind. And I do mean cold - it was 33, but that strong westerly wind brought the wind chill well into the 20s. So the 2nd quater of the race was tough. I went through the half-way point in this double out and back course in about 43:40 or so. About 2 minutes faster than I had planned. What would this do to my 2nd half hammering?

I did manage to pick up the pace just a bit. Most of the 2nd half miles were right around 6:30, even those going into the wind. I powered away from a group I was running with at about mile 8, but one guy came back and passed me at about mile 12. I still did finish fairly strong - my last mile was my best - a 6:21.

I came in at about 1:26:40. So I did manage to do those last 6.1 in just under 40 minutes; at least this went according to plan. I think it was about 10th place overall and 1st in my age group. They gave me my award as I crossed the finish line - I like that. This may be the fastest I've ever run this course, and I've done it many times. It's also my best half in about 5 years or so. Still not quite where I want to be yet though.

Now I gotta rest/recover, train and then taper in the 9 days between now and Boston.

Yesterday's Shopping and Today's Running

Last night Debbie made stuffed tilapia for Kathy and Jessy, and then we all went to Mustard Seed for the ingredients to today's concoction, and then to Staples for a new camera for Jessy.

Today's running was ok. 5 outside in 40 minutes, and then 10 on the mill with 7 at marathon pace. So so... Trying to recover for the 1/2 on Saturday, so I took a cold bath. Could only stand 4 minutes! It just hurt too much. Don't know why I could stand it in the summer but not now...

today's run and busy

2 on the mill today. weight back down to 152 - that's good.

Been real busy with work lately - hard to keep up with all that as well as other life stuff. Been reading the DaVinci Code and watching movies in the spare time I do have.

Today's Run - 2006-04-04

After some so-so runs and one stinker, I was starting to lose faith. Also working against me today was the cold (30F with some cold wind) and the fact that I ran some treadmill intervals late yesterday afternoon. Since Dave didn't run, and since the weather wasn't too awful, I decided that today would be the serious speedwork day.

Glad it happened the way it did. Like last week, I did 8 x 1600, averaging about 6:22 (6:25,6:23,6:23,6:20,6:22,6:23,6:20,6:14). Actually a bit better than last week. Excellent!

Recent Running

Some decent, but not great running in Connecticut, in some decent (40s, low 50s):

On Saturday I did about 21 in about 2:54. Most of the miles were rather slow - about 8:30 pace, but then when I finally found the 5-mile race course (after looking for it for most of the first 13 miles), I picked it up some - perhaps 7:45 or so pace.

I was tired on Sunday - excuses include Saturday's 21, Saturday's walking in NYC, and daylight savings time. But it really wasn't that bad. Half of the miles were slow again, until I once again wound up on the 5-mile course and managed an 8-minute pace there. Altogether 10 in 83.5.

Then came today. The weather was good (low 50s, very windy) but I wasn't. I did my 11-mile loop that includes the new subs, and it was my biggest stinker in a long time. 96 minutes - pretty much of a death march.

To atone, I stepped on the mill in the afternoon - 4 in 27 and a half with 8 x 400M averaging 90 seconds. A little atonement goes a long way.

Weekend In Connecticut

It was tough for me to break away from work, but Debbie and I spent a whirlwind weekend in Connecticut to visit Veronica and Barry. Not much happening Friday night, but Saturday we spent the day in "the city". Stood in line at TKTS and wound up with tickets to "The Producers" at 35% off - still about $300. Then we walked a long way to the Candle Cafe, a vegan restaurant that Veronica liked. It was yummy - Debbie and I bought their cookbook. The play was really great fun - extremely funny. The only bad thing was the ridiculously uncomfortable seats. Ate again at Friday's and took the train back to their joint. A long but fun day.

Barry got the bad news that evening - he wasn't accepted at Case for his PhD quest. They're going to have to decide what to do now.

We're planning to return in a few weeks for his graduation.

Today's Run - 2006-03-30

I wasn't gonna run at all today because I had a 7am call. But I awoke early and out I went. I done good: the Substation 11-mile course in 85.5 minutes - I think my second best ever. This includes 3 miles at tempo pace - 20:06. I'm happy with this one because it was unexpected.

Weight is down to 152! Lowest in a LONG time.

Today's Track Workout

First time at the track in months. And it was a great run. Smooth, strong and consistent. 8 x 1600 in (6:28, 6:23, 6:26, 6:24, 6:23, 6:24, 6:24, 6:10). Average was 6:23. Altogether 12 in 89.5 minutes. More good news: weight is down to 153!

Yesterday's Runs

I did 4 on the mill in 28 before heading over to Broadview Heights to run 10 with Dave in about 83.5.

Today's Long Run - 2006-03-26

Good thing I had signed up for this 20-mile training run with the Vertical Runner gang. I needed the motivation. After yesterday's runs and yesterday evening eating and staying late at Iris and Mike's, I felt really lousy. But after the 100 or so of us got going, I felt even worse. At about mile 6 I finally began to feel human again and picked it up, finishing strong. This run was down into and out of the valley twice, so there were plenty of hills. I averaged something like 7:45, stopping my watch at the aid stations. Met some new folks from Chagrin Falls who were running with Eileen Meisler.

Today's Races - 2006-03-25

I somehow got myself signed up into yet another race series: the Ohio Challenge Series again, after a couple year hiatus. (Last year it was the Hermes Race Series.) This joining was with the hopes that it would make me faster. Based on experience from prior years, as well as today, perhaps the opposite is true.

The Strongsville Super Saturday 1-Mile and 5-K was in the series. They allow you to run both races for only $2 over the regular $15 fee, so of course I considered the cost per mile and signed for both. Only the 5-K counted towards the race series.

So wouldn’t you know it? My better race turned out to be the 1-mile. Finishing in 5:36, my best in years (my only in years), I immediately wondered if it was short. Who knows. But it felt good to run fast and strong (there in Strongsville) the whole way. I was probably about 10th overall, with a smattering of high school punks and other fast guys ahead of me. All in all, pretty good going.

Then came the 5-K. I was hopeful that I could continue that fast running stuff… But it didn’t happen. I finished in 19:43. About a minute slower than I feel like I should be. At least I finished fairly well.

Got 2nd in my AG for the 1-mile. The guy who looked like he might be in my AG was, and he just beat me by a little. In the 5-K, I battled the same guy (who undoubtedly was also taking advantage of the favorable miles per dollar), only to come up short again. And he only wound up third in our AG, so I was out of the money for that one.

So the 5-K was a disappointment, but then, it’s only a 5-K…

Today's Run

Just a jog over to Nicollet Island and the warehouse district. Calling it 3 in 25. Finally a bit warmer here - low 30s, but some snow.

Get to go home today. Much busier this week.

Today's Run - 2006-03-22

It was a pretty morning here in Minnesota. Cold (21 or so) but pretty. I started out very shaky - dizzy and tired. Heading southbound along the Mississippi, it took me 63.5 minutes to do the roughly 7.5 miles that usually take me under an hour.

I had been planning to do negative splits anyway, but hadn't planned on them being real negative. Turned out that they were though. The wind hit me as I turned back to the north, and it was COLD - just about like yesterday. I tried to pick up the pace, mostly so I could get out of the cold faster. I did - I finished the second half in 54.5 minutes as the sun was beginning to rise and the wind was about to kill me.

Not a bad run.

Today's Run - 2006-03-21

Woke up early so I did the Grand Rounds. IT WAS COLD!! It was about 23, but the wind was BRUTAL. The worst part was the middle - Minnehaha Parkway heading east. I nearly froze up entirely.

I used to call this 21, but it may be closer to 20. I think I'll call it 20 this time. Despite the cold, this was a solid run. I felt good and strong for the first 6.5 or so down to South Beach on Lake Harriet (55.5). Then came the real cold 5.5 or so on Minnehaha Parkway. That part was miserable, but I did it in 44. The last 8 to 9 wasn't so cold, and I did it very fast - in 62. The last 5 (what I call 5 anyway) was in 36.

So I'm happy with it. But I'm happier that it's over.

Monday, March 20, 2006

Today's Run - 2006-03-20

Back in Minnesota today. Probably coulda run outside - it turned out to be not as cold as I had thought. I did want to go out to get better gloves. Anyways, I needed to do some speed and I did.

10 x 1600 @ 6:24 pace. 4 @ 9.3mph (6:27), 6 @ 9.4mph (6:22). Not bad at all. Altogether 16 miles in 1:50:30. Not bad at all. Tomorrow and the next day I will run outside though.

Sunday, March 19, 2006

Today's Runs - 2006-03-19

Pretty tired legs today, but I managed three on the mill in 22.5, then some weights, then 3 on the President's route in 25.5. Those last 3 were tough. Good that I could run at all.

Saturday, March 18, 2006

Today's Run and Projector

Pretty good, steady and solid 22-mile run with Dave, Brian and Amy. Went down into the valley via the parkway & back up Snowville. Extra loops in BVH. Steady 8 min pace I think.

Got the projector and the sound system pretty much the way they should be. Debbie has the wall painted - she may put up a border yet. I may add some other cables to improve things a bit. But it's all pretty durn cool.

Friday, March 17, 2006

Today's Run - 2006-03-17

Only 3 on the north of 303 route. Weird (and cold) to run outside again. Slow too - 26.5 minutes. Other bad news - I gained 5 pounds in 5 days. Back to 159. I always do that after a trip though.

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Today's Run and Movie - 2006-03-15

I did yet another dreadmill run here in MSP. I was very tired but still managed a 7-mile MP run in 47:55. Altogether I did 14 in 1:40. My toenails are really shot nowadays.

I had some time in the afternoon (it was an easy week) so I saw "Good Night and Good Luck". Very good flick.

Hope I can make it home tomorrow with the coming storm.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Today's Run - 2006-03-14

Another treadmill run at the hotel. This time I did a 13-mile MP, and it wasn't bad, especially considering yesterday's intervals. Altogether 16 miles in 1:52:40. I plan to take it a bit easier tomorrow.

Monday, March 13, 2006

Today's Run - 2006-03-13

I was ready to run outside for this week in Minneapolis, except the weather turns out to be nasty. I had to run inside today, and it'll probably be that way all week.

Today's run was pretty good - 9 x 1600 at about 6:27. Altogether 16 in 1:53 (15, then weights, then one more on ellipticl). I held on some, but not much.

Sunday, March 12, 2006

Party and Projector

Got the projector mounted the other day. It's really cool. Debbie will be painting the wall with screen goo next week. Only problem now seems to be lining it up exactly. We'll work on that.

Big party (18-19 people) for Rita and George here at Shortstack yesterday. I think everyone had a great time.

St Malachi 5-Miler

Great running weather for a change: 40s with a slight breeze.

I warmed up by doing the 2-miler in about 13:30.

The Five? I finished in 31:52. Very good going, and my best 5-miler in a while. Very consistent 6:22 pace. But this made up my mind: I'm not in outstanding enough shape to take on the Toledo Marathon in a great time, so I'll bag that one and I'll be more patient.

Here are the splits: 6:22, 6:26, 6:21, 6:20, 6:21. Good consistency, considering the hills, including that last one.

I may have gotten an award, but didn't stick around to find out.

Thursday, March 09, 2006

Today's Long Run - 2006-03-09

Not too bad. 16 miles in the wind and rain in 2:12. By then I'd had enough and decided to finish on the mill. I did another 7 in 51 minutes, with 5 at MP. I'd be thrilled with this, but there was a bit of holding on. Still, not a bad run for today.

Today's Running

I did

1 on the mill
12 with Amy and Dave in BVH
4 on the mill in the afternoon with 7 x 400 @ 90 seconds

Not a bad day of running

Today's Slog & Other Stuff

4 miles on the mill in 31 minutes. And 158 pounds after a big eating weekend (Kathy and Mike's Saturday with pizza, fried chicken, yesterday making Chinese for Dave and Jill). Hopefully tomorrow will be better all around.

BTW, Our House's name is "Shortstack". 'Nuff said.

30K Today. Hooray.

This was to be my third race at the somewhat obscure 30K distance. The other two were at this same race (NCN Catch a Leprechaun) in 2002 (2:14:30) and 2003 (2:16:30). The course consists of two 15K loops in Avon Lake. A couple of the miles are along Lake Erie along Lake Avenue. Since the race is in early March, it’s often cold and windy.

Today it was very cold again at about 20F for the start, but it was sunny and there was almost no wind. That made a huge difference. My plan was to run the first half conservatively, at about a 7:30 pace, and then to pick it up to a 7:00 pace on the back nine (9.3 miles, that is). This would bring me in near my rather “soft” 2:14 and change PR. I overdressed; I could have used thinner gloves and two, rather than three layers of shirts. But the extra clothes probably didn’t weigh me down or overheat me too much.

Starting conservatively as planned, I did manage to do the first half at about a 7:22 pace, coming in and around in about 1:08:40. That pace didn’t feel quite as easy as I wanted it to, but I did manage to start to pick it up as I hit the nine-mile mark and even more as I started the second half. I had counted about 15 runners ahead of me at that point. Mile 10 was my fastest at about 6:33 or so. I passed about 4 by the 11-mile mark.

Could I keep those sub-7 minute miles going? Mostly. I would’ve liked to do each of the last 9 at that pace, but couldn’t quite make it. Mile 14 or 15 was just over 7 minutes, as were the final 2. After getting to about 12th place (still not sure though) no one passed me, and I passed no one. In fact, I hardly saw anyone other than a few random volunteers from about 11 on.

I finished in 2:13:22; 1st in my age group, and pretty decent placing overall. It’s nice to get the AG trophy right away. That second 15K was 1:04:42 or so, for a 6:57 pace. My pace for the entire distance was about 7:10.

This is all pretty encouraging. A PR at my great old age, albeit a “soft” one. I’ll take it. I think losing those few pounds has helped. Just one mild disappointment: that those last two miles were slower than the previous 7. I’ll still take it.

yesterday

I ran 7 on the mill with 5 at MP - 49:40 altogether. So so.

Bought the projector along with the mount and a "bulb guarantee". Don't know about that last thing, but got a good deal on the projector itself.

Best Buy says they finally got my reward zone thing straightened out. Needed a new DVD recorder anyway, so we went and got one. It's defective, so I gotta return it. Best Buy STILL has the receiver.

The Art Auction

Debbie and I went with Kathy to an art auction at a Greek church last Saturday. We enjoyed the art itself, but the actual auction got old fast. We heard all about lithographs, which are copies of expensive art, but made to have "value" by having the artist sign and sometimes number them, or even make them. I wasn't buying into this stuff at all, but when one picture came up that Debbie liked, through a misunderstandin, we wound up getting it for $375. I was very upset - it was nice, but I didn't think it was worth it. The next day Debbie managed to get a refund. Much better now.

More on Identity Theft

I received an email last week - my check request / balance transfer had been processed against my credit card account. This alarmed me because I hadn't requested any such thing. I checked it out: $8,000, plus a $150 processing fee had been taken out - I called them immediately. I answered a mess of questions and they told me that I wouldn't be charged, pending the results from an "investigator". I want to file a police report, but they suggested I wait till I hear from the investigator. This could be up to 10 days away.

I keep checking my credit otherwise. I closed some old accounts today. I've also signed up for a newer, less expensive credit protection. And I added some passwords.

Don't know what else to do.

Today's Runs - 2006-03-02

Lousy going this morning - 4 in 30.5 with lots of holding on (to the mill) and lots of stops. Much better at lunch time: 3 in 21 with 6 x 400 in 90.

Today's Running - 2006-03-01

I did my 16-mile route with some hopes of doing it in a reasonable time. Maybe 8-minute pace or so. Didn't happen. While I felt smooth and strong, the time was very disappointing - 2:21. Oh well. It was cold (20 or so) so maybe that's an excuse.

I did manage to get a tempo run in on the mill when I got back - 3 in 20:29, plus another in 7:30 before I headed outside. If it wasn't for that mill, I'd be mighty slow.

Today's Runs - 2006-02-28

I did two on the mill before heading out to run with Dave and Amy. I'll say it's 9 with them in 78 minutes, although we did have a decent pace for most of it. Some snow and slush, and very cold (11F).

Yesterday and Today's Running

Yesterday I did 16 miles into and out of the cold (20F) wind in 2:16.5. Slow going out due to the wind, but decent coming back. Nice route with no Sunday traffic.

Today I stuck to the mill. 7 miles with 2 x (1600, 1200, 800) in 49 minutes overall. Here's the speed for each distance: 9.3MPH(6:27), 9.5MPH(6:18/4:42), 9.7MPH(6:11/3:06).

Half-way decent running, even though I felt sluggish. Originally planned to do more, but ran out of time. A bit of holding on. At least it's speedwork.

Today's Long Run

2 hours, 46 minutes with Dave, Amy and Brian. Pretty decent pace. Interesting weather - sunny, 40, extremely windy. Nice to get out to the parkway again. A few hills.

Yesterday's Run

They fixed the treadmill while I was gone last week and it worked good for me yesterday. I needed some more speed so I did 6 x 400 @ 90 seconds (10mph). Altogether 6 in 43.5 minutes.

My toe blisters were killing me last night. They don't *look* infected. Gotta take care of them.

Today's Run 2006-02-22

I missed by one mile my goal of doing 45 miles in 3 days spread fairly evenly. I did 16 with a 13 mile MP Monday, 14 with 8 x 1Mile Tuesday, and 14 miles including a 5 mile MP today. I also did 6 x 200 in 45. Was gonna do the 15 today, but my feet wouldn't take another mile. It's blisters on the ole toes. The 14 was in 1:41:39. Not bad considering the last 3 in total.

Great Run Today - Now My Feet Hurt

Today's run was an excellent one - especially following yesterday's 13-mile MP run, and last night's Thai Curry that wasn't sitting well with me. I did 8 x 1600 on the mill in 6:29 (half of each at 9.2mph, and half at 9.3mph). Altogether 14 in 1:38. Now just one more medium-length run for tomorrow.

But my feet hurt. My toes (the ole blacktoe) are one thing, but the bottoms of my feet hurt too.

Today's Run - 2006-02-20

Since I didn't want to pack the tons of cold weather running gear for frigid Minneapolis, I planned to run on the hotel dreadmill all week.

Today's run was pretty decent. 16 miles in 1:52, with 13 of them at marathon pace. The reason I'm not ecstatic is that I did have to hold on some. Maybe less-so than the last time I did this a few weeks ago in Hawaii. So decent is a good word for it.

Took a cold bath afterwards, but I'm still somewhat sore. The rest of the running week should be interesting.

Other Stuff

Kathy had us over for grilled catfish the other night. Very good food.

Debbie and I are still holding at our same weights, which are still down from before. Still being good on the diet.

We got out for some walks last week, including one at Hinckley, but now winter is back with a vengence.

I'm still researching projectors. Procrastinating as always.

We're working on the closets in the basement as well as the blinds over the electrical box.

I've been busy with work. Going to Minneapolis Sunday.

Today's Run - 2006-02-18

Good thing I ran long on Thurday. Good thing this was to be an easy week. Because today was miserable. Temps in the high single digits. Wind chills from 0 to -10. Snow. Blowing snow. Yech.

I started driving towards Broadview Heights, but the roads were terrible, so I turned back and ran from home. About 8 miles at about a 10-minute pace. About 78.5 minutes of suffering in the cold.

More Stupid Dan Tricks for Today's Run - 2006-02-16

The Stupid Dan Trick du jour? Same as Tuesday - if I happen to wake up at 3am, then maybe I'll do an extra 10 before the 10 with Dave. Just like Tuesday, of course, this is what happened.

But some things were different. It was raining off and on as I was headed for BVH. I started at 4:05 in the cold (47F) rain, and it got worse as I went on. It was a cold and wet 10 miles. I did it a minute and a half slower than Tuesday - 75:30. The rain subsided a bit in the last few miles.

Then I did the loop again with Dave. This time there was only a little rain. We did well - 81 minutes. This is one of our better runs together on that course.

I do believe I'm doing fairly well these days. But I'm still chilled to the bone from that cold rain.

Today's Run 2005-02-15

I wasn't gonna run at all, but it's nice now, and the forecast is for rain tonight - who knows about tomorrow AM. Nice noon-time run on tired legs. Thought about a second go-around, but too tired. 3 on the presidential streets in 24.

Bad News Good News

The bad news was that I'm back up to 160 on the newly calibrated scale. Maybe I'll check that calibration again.

The good news is that I had a really good run today. Typical Dan thinking: Last night I thought: I'll set my alarm for 4:10 or so as usual to meet Dave, but if I happen to wake up at 3, I'll get there by 4 and run one 10-mile loop before we start together at 5:15.

Of course this is what happened. Best news is that I did the loop in a PR of 74 minutes. That's about a 2-minute PR, but I'll have to check. Felt fine.

Now a 7 1/2 minute pace should not be such a big deal for 10 miles, but it seems to be on that course. I'll take it.

Dave and I picked up Amy and Debbie and I ran for another 93 minutes. I'll call it 21 total.

Today's Run and Encounter - 2006-02-12

Bob H, Greg D, Rita C, George Z, Tom B, and yours truly had a nice run in the snow and cold at Hinckley today. Tom and I did a few trails, a few bike paths and a few tiny little road hills. Bob started with us, but wound up with George going around the lake. Rita and Greg did some other dipsy doodles. Rita wore pants!! First time since last winter. She needed them - it was pretty cold out there. The second most exciting thing to happen was when Tom and I raced a snowplow to the stop sign at the end of a road. We won. And that's a good thing - had we been 2nd and 3rd, we'd have been plowed into the snowbank. Tom - stop me if I'm stretching the truth a bit here.

George and Rita, Debbie and I and Laura watched BBB perform with second third of the Elysium Trio at BW. Very good concert. Rita and George had to split, but the rest of us went to Nuevo Acapulco for some good Mexican food afterwards.

Twas a good day all around.

Other Stuff

Had Kathy and Jessy over for pizza last night. I made it healthy and low-fat, but it was still 7 points per piece. After Jessy went home we watched "Wedding Crashers". Funny, but too long - it dragged at times, and I didn't like the formula ending.

Sat and talked with Dave and Jill after today's run. Nice conversation.

We'll go out tonight for early Valentine's Day.

Today's Long Run 2005-02-11

Although I bonked yesterday, I had thought that that would be enough for the week. Maybe 10 to 15 today and then I'd quit. Didn't happen. Peer pressure from Dave and Brian got to me. We went down into the valley via Columbia and back up via Boston Mills, so there were no opportunities to quit until about 2 1/2 hours in. By that time I decided to run the last 2 (due to more peer pressure) and call it 20. Luckily the weather held - it was in the 20s with only a bit of wind and no new snow - and that had been the main reason that I had run long yesterday.

I didn't entirely bonk, but I couldn't keep up with those two going up the hills out of the valley. I was pleasantly surprized, however, when I could stay with them afterwards.

2:46. Call it 20.

Here's the interesting part: This is the second 80-mile week in a row, following a 77. I need a rest, but won't get it tomorrow because of DRNEO run. Probably Monday.

My Latest Bonk

Yesterday I did a 16-miler because I wanted to get some mileage in whilst the weather was runnable. I got up and out early and did a route I did a few weeks ago: Substation, Hamilton, Abbeyville, East Law to Metzger, up to 303, Myrtle, Hartneck, thru new subs, back on Hick Ridge, Manitaulin, Walnut Ridge & back. Great route!

Not so great a run. I think I bonked from lack of calories. First 5 were at 8-minute pace. Next 7 (short - to the rr tracks) were in 57. Those last 4, which are probably long, took 41 minutes. Didn't feel that bad tho.

2:18 - still faster than I was going in Maui.

WW and Today's Run

I was at 160 when we got back over the weekend, but after just a few days on weight watchers, I weighed in at 155 today!

I ran with Dave and Brian this morning - unusual for a Thursday. Glad I did. We did the old 10-mile loop in 84 minutes - good considering the cold and the poor footing.

Today's Run - 2006-02-08

A great effort, but not so great results.

Got a bit of a late start, so I drove to Hinckley in order to avoid the morning traffic around home. So it was 4 loops around the lake for 12 miles. Here are the splits:
24:54, 23:11, 21:19, 22:52 - 91 altogether.

I had hoped to be able to do the last 6 at MP - sub 7 minute miles. Almost made it for loop 3. Maybe it was the bad footing - there was 1" of new snow, and a bit of slush and ice. At least I got some hills and some decently fast running in.

Today's Run - 2006-02-07

About 10 miles with Dave and Amy in the cold wind and snow. It really isn't that bad - about 23F and only an inch or so of new snow, but it sure seems like it. About 88 minutes.

Weight Watchers

Debbie and I are both officially on as of Sunday. It's tough to keep track of these points, but I think it'll get easier. I get a lot of credit for the running. Even after 2 days, I can feel the weight coming off. Lost 2 pounds already.

Kathy has now lost 10 - she looks great. And Mike has lost 13, but he's not following the plan exactly.

Identity Theft

It happened to me. Before we left, got a call asking if we made an $11 charge in another state at a store on one of our credit cards. Sinde we did not, we were sent new cards with different numbers.

When we got home, we had some more ominous messages:
Did we request a different one of our credit cards to be sent to an address in Alaska. Since we didn't, that credit card will also be reissued to us.
Did we apply for new credit at Bank of America. This was the scariest because it means that someone has my SSN.

I checked another credit report. Everything is ok there. BOA told me to call one of the credit bureaus to place a 90 day fraud alert. I did so.

Looks like we're ok for now, but for how long? How did this happen? Even if we get through this for the short term, what's to stop it from happening again years from now?
